Important Note

Two foam inserts must be used in carrier during transport when sending to the Blood Bank.

Additional Codes

Epic Order Code: LAB4749

Specimen Required

Lithium Heparin (green top)  4.0ml tube-fully filled.

Collection Instructions: Use a 19 or 21 gauge needle. (butterfly with tubing is acceptable).

A discard tube or 3-5cc to be drawn first to clear the needle of any tissue thromboplastin released during the process of accessing the vein.

May be drawn from a A-line or similar line using a plastic syringe that is NOT heparinized. Start by filling a 10-20cc syringe.(This may be re-infused to the patient after collection is complete). Next use a new syringe to collect the appropriate volume for the specimen tube. Using a safe transfer device with a 20 gauge needle to allow the lithium heparin tube to fill completely.

Specimen labeled with an Epic chart label and the date and time drawn written on the label and on paperwork.

Container Type:

Lithium Heparin Only

Utility

Indicated for adult patients where an evaluation of their blood platelet function related hemostasis properties is desired. Commonly used to assess clinical conditions in CV surgery and cardiology procedures to assess  thrombotic risk due to inhibition of platelet function caused by anticoagulants.

Limitations

Results from the TEG 6s analysis should not be the sole basis for a patient diagnosis, but should be evaluated together with the patient’s medical history, the clinical picture and, if necessary, further hemostasis tests. The TEG 6s System is indicated for use with adult patients where an evaluation of their blood hemostasis properties is desired. Hemostasis evaluation with the TEG 6s System is commonly used to assess clinical conditions in cardiovascular surgery and cardiology procedures to assess hemorrhage or thrombosis conditions.

No reference ranges have been established for patients under the age of 15 years.
