Optimal (at least 1 mL of fluid for each of the following)

  • Syringe**
  • Lavender top
  • Green top (lithium heparin)

**Inpatients: collection requires only a syringe (no lavender or green)

Acceptable

  • minimum of 1 mL in syringe

Optimal Collection Volume:

 3 mL of synovial fluid

Collection Instructions:
  1. Use aseptic aspiration preparation.
  2. Place fluid into collection tubes immediately after aspiration.
  3. Mix by inverting tubes several times.

Specimen Transport Temperature:

Processing Instructions:
