Additional Codes

Epic Order Code: LAB2247
Sunquest Order Code: PLVX

Specimen Required

Container Type:

Optimal:  Two 1.8 mL BD brand or 2.0 Greiner brand sodium citrate tubes

Acceptable: One 1.8 mL BD or one 2.0 mL Greiner sodium citrate tube

Unacceptable: 2.7 mL sodium citrate tubes

Optimal Collection Volume:

3.6 mL whole blood

Tube must be filled to proper level as indicated by opaque line etched on each blue top tube.

Collection Instructions:
  • Tube must be filled to line.
  • Gently invert 5 to 10 times to mix blood.
  • If collected through a blood collection set (butterfly), a discard tube must first be drawn to eliminate dead space from tubing.
Processing Instructions:

1. Do not centrifuge sample.

2. Testing must not be performed sooner than 10 minutes after collection and later than 4 hours after collection.

Useful For

Measures the level of platelet P2Y12-receptor blockade to help identify patient response to antiplatelet therapy, including clopidogrel (Plavix), prasugrel (Effient) and ticagrelor (Brilinta).

Method Name

The VerifyNow System is a turbidimetric based optical detection system which measures platelet induced aggregation.

Specimen Minimum Volume

Collecting minimum volumes can result in a need for sample recollection, and/or a delay in results. Minimum volumes are subjective and cannot account for all aspects of specimen and testing needs. Refer to the Specimen Required section for optimal volumes for laboratory specimens. Contact the Bronson Laboratory if complex collection exceptions occur that require more information.

Minimum Volume: Two 1.8 mL blue top citrate tubes
Neonate Volume: One 1.8 mL blue top citrate tubes

Performing Laboratory

Day(s) Performed

Reference Values

  • Pre-drug reference range: 194-418 PRU
  • Post-drug results:
    • A lower PRU indicates drug efficacy (less platelet aggregation).
    • A higher PRU value indicates drug resistance (more platelet aggregation).
    • Published data suggests that post drug PRU values <or = 230 are associated with better clinical outcomes.
    • Post drug PRU values >230 are associated with higher rates of death, MI, or stent thrombosis.
