Test Code OVP Ova and Parasite Examination, Stool
Methodology
Test includes concentration for ova and parasite microscopic
examination, trichrome staining, Giardia antigen and
Cryptosporidium antigen.
Patient should have 1 or more of the
following:
1. Travel history outside of the U.S.
2. International adoption
3. HIV positive
4. Exposure to parasites other than Giardia duodenalis and
Cryptosporidium parvum
If patient does not meet 1 of the above criteria, Contact provider or unit to clarify.

Specimen Requirements
- Two or three specimens collected on consecutive days
are required to rule out intestinal parasite infection. If specific
pathogens are suspected, this should be noted on request form for
processing. - No more than 3 specimens will be accepted without prior
consultation with the laboratory. - Specimen submitted from inpatient’s after the forth hospital
day will not be accepted withiout prior consultation.
If pinworm is suspected, a pinworm specimen should be
submitted. See #PWOR Pinworm Preparation for more information.
Causes for Rejection: Unpreserved specimen; or
specimen obtained with mineral oil, castor oil, bismuth, iron, or
magnesium compounds.
Specimen Type: Stool, preserved
Container/Tube: Protofix Collection Kit (1
vial)
Collection Instructions:
1. Fill vial to line indicated in kit.
2. Specimen obtained with a warm saline enema or Fleet
Phospho-soda is also acceptable.
3. Label vial with patient’s name, date of birth, and date
and time of collection.
Specimen Transport Temperature
Stool in Protofix Collection Vial - Ambient 30 days. Refrigeration OK.
Liquid Stool in Sterile Container - Ambient 30 minutes
Soft/Formed Stool in Sterile Container - Ambient 1 hour
Reference Values
Normal finding: no ova or parasites seen
Abnormal finding: parasite identified
