Methodology
Usual clinical circumstances warranting kidney biopsy
include:
1. Nephrotic syndrome; most adults and infants and
nonresponding
children
2. Asymptomatic proteinuria
3. Acute nephritic syndrome
4. Systemic diseases with renal involvement
5. Hematuria of uncertain nature
6. Transplantation rejection or failure
7. Drug reaction or toxicity
8. Non-recovering acute renal failure
Performing Laboratory
Bronson Laboratory Services-Surgical Pathology
Specimen Requirements
Call Pathology office at extension 8997 prior to
procedure for specific instructions.
Specimen Type: Fresh kidney tissue
Container/Tube: Plastic container with
no
added fixative or preservative
Specimen Volume: Entire collection
Collection Instructions:
1. Label container with patient’s full name and date
of
birth.
2. Freeze tissue and send frozen.
3. Cause for rejection includes dry specimen, tissue fixed
in
formalin (cannot be used for electron microscopy or
immunofluorescent studies), and unlabeled or incorrectly
labeled
specimen which will be returned for correct
identification.
Additional Information:
1. Notify Pathology office at extension 8997 when specimen
is
ready, and give patient’s full name, hospital
number,
O.R. number, clinical history and laboratory
findings (essential to interpretation).
2. If gross examination or light microscopy reveals tissue
not
to be renal cortex, the immunofluorescence and electron
microscopy
may be omitted, depending upon the case.
Forms: Tissue Requisition; indicate
patient’s full name, date of birth, date of service,
physician, and O.R. number
