Important Note

Test Request Sample Type Test Code Description
Quantitiative Bence Jones 24hr urine UPEP Urine Electrophoresis includes Quantiative Bence Jones if present.
Qualitative Bence Jones 24 hr urine UPEP Immunofixation Electrophoresis (IFEU) is done if indicated by pathologist review.
Bence Jones (not specified) 24 hr urine UPEP See above entries.
Bence Jones (not specified) random UPEP

Note: Per September 2010 LabWire, random urine testing is not the optimal sample for monoclonal studies. A 24 hour sample is recommended.

Methodology

Immunofixation Includes identification of monoclonal gammopathies and pathologist interpretation.

Immunofixation electrophoresis of urine is most often ordered to evaluate a monoclonal globulin detected in a protein electrophoresis or to delineate a possible lymphoproliferative process, particularly myeloma. This procedure will characterize the specific light- and heavy-chain components of a monoclonal protein. Pathologist may order quantitative immunoglobulins to further evaluate any monoclonal protein detected.
