Positive: > 300 ng/mL

Interpretive

Nicotine is rapidly metabolized in the liver to cotinine, which is excreted into the urine. Most tobacco users excrete cotinine in the range of 1,000 ng/mL to 8,000 ng/mL. Following the cessation of nicotine intake, urine cotinine levels become undetectable in 3 days to 2 weeks depending upon the frequency and duration of tobacco use and the hydration and concentration of the urine sample.
