Specimen Requirements

Container Type:

Optimal: Green top

 

Acceptable: Mint top

  • If using mint top, do not centrifuge.

*This test may also be done on the same specimen as an arterial, venous, or capillary blood gas package. If that is the case, please refer to the blood gas specimen handling requirements.

Optimal Collection Volume: 

4 mL

Minimum Volume:

0.5 mL whole blood

Collection Instructions:

Gently invert the sample 5-6 times after collection.

Specimen Transport:

Refrigerate

Processing Instructions: 
  1. Deliver sample to chemistry department.

Specimen Stability

Samples are stable for 72 hours refrigerated.

Specimen Rejection Criteria

Quantity not sufficient.

Useful For

This is hemoglobin with the iron atom oxidized to the ferric (Fe 3+) state and is incapable of oxygen binding. Methemoglobin concentrations of two or three percent indicate an abnormal condition caused by toxic agents such as phenacetin, nitrates, or chlorates.
