Methodology
Papanicolaou Stain
Includes routine cytologic evaluation of cytocentrifuged
smears, a monolayer smear preparation by ThinPrep
method, and cell block evaluation (when applicable).
Used to aid in the diagnosis of certain malignant,
non-neoplastic or inflammatory conditions.

Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type:
Breast, ovary, thyroid, or renal cyst fluid
Container/Tube: Screw-capped, sterile
container
Specimen Volume: Entire collection
Collection Instructions:
1. Aseptically collect specimen.
2. Submit specimen fresh and unfixed. (Specimen from
outside
Bronson Laboratory Services should be fixed in
CytoLyt solution and 2 air-dried smears should be
submitted.)
3. Label container with patient’s full name, date of
birth, date of collection, and source of specimen.
4. Send specimen with completed requisition to the
laboratory
immediately at ambient temperature. If not fixed in CytoLyt
solution, send specimen refrigerated.
Additional Information:
1. If culture is also requested, make sure a separate
specimen
is provided to Microbiology.
2. Causes for rejection include inadequate specimen
identification,
improper labeling, or prior fixation in alcohol or formalin.
Forms: Pathology requisition; include
patient’s full name, date of birth, specimen source, date
of
service, and pertinent clinical history
