Test Code HBSB or LAB472 Hepatitis B Surface Antibody, Serum

Important Note

Patient Preparation: For 12 hours before this test do not take multivitamins or dietary supplements containing biotin (vitamin B7), which is commonly found in hair, skin, and nail supplements and multivitamins. Biotin can interfere with many immunoassay tests.

Specimen Requirements

Container Type:

Optimal: Gold

Acceptable: Red.

Optimal Collection Volume:

4.5mL; full tube

Minimum Volume:

1 mL whole blood

Collection Instructions:

Gently invert the sample 5-6 times after collection.

Specimen Transport:

Refrigerate

Processing Instructions:

1. Allow the specimen to clot for 30 minutes.

2. Centrifuge specimen within 2 hours of collection.

3. After centrifugation, specimen tubes without a gel barrier should have the serum aliquoted to a false bottom container.

4. Keep the serum refrigerated until testing can be performed.

Useful For

Assay results may be used as an aid in the determination of susceptibility to hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection for individuals prior to or following HBV vaccination or where vaccination status is unknown.

Methodology

Roche Cobas - Electrochemiluminescence immunoassay

Reference Ranges

The accepted criterion for immunity to HBV is ≥ 10 mIU/mL of anti-HBs as defined by the WHO Reference Preparation. Because of the indeterminate range, the Roche method lists ≥ 11.5 mIU/mL as the range for immunity. To flag those without immunity as “abnormal,” the numerical reference range is >11.4 mIU/mL.

HBSB Result Comment Added
< 8.5 mIU/mL NOTE: Anti-HBs is below 10 mIU/ml. Patient is considered to not have protective immunity to Hepatitis B Infection

≥ 8.5 mIU/mL to

< 11.5 mIU/mL

Results are indeterminate. Repeat testing in 4 weeks may yield a definitive answer. Evaluation of other diagnostic markers for hepatitis B is also appropriate.
≥ 11.5 mIU/mL NOTE: Anti-HBs is greater than or equal to 10 mIU/ml. Patient is considered to have protective immunity to Hepatitis B Infection.

Interpretive

A result > 11.5 mIU/mL indicates antibodies to hepatitis B resulting from vaccination or past infection, which indicates immunity to reinfection.
