Important Note

In 2002, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released revised guidelines for the prevention of perinatal group B streptococcal disease. The new CDC guidelines recommend universal prenatal screening for vaginal and rectal group B streptococcal (GBS) colonization of all pregnant women at 35 to 37 weeks gestation.

Methodology

Molecular test from enrichment broth for group B
streptococcus only.

Susceptibility will be automatically performed on positive
specimens from patients who have a documented Penicillin
allergy.

female between 35 to 37 weeks gestation

Collection Instructions: 

1. Specimen source and time of collection are
required.

2. Label tube with patient’s full name, date of birth, and
date and time of collection.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Refrigerate/Ambient 72 hours

Reference Values

Normal finding: no group B streptococcus

Abnormal  finding: positive for group B
streptococcus
