Important Note

Venous pH is a whole blood test. Do not centrifuge samples.

Specimen Requirements

Container Type:

Optimal:  Green

 

Acceptable: Mint or Heparin syringe

   

Optimal Collection Volume: 

5 mL; full tube or full syringe

Minimum Volume:

1 mL whole blood

Collection Instructions:
  1. Gently invert the sample 5-6 times after collection.
  2. Send sample promptly to lab for testing.
Specimen Transport:

Refrigerated

Processing Instructions: 
  1. Do not centrifuge sample.
  2. Bring directly to chemistry and place on ice until testing can be performed.

The pH value of blood may be the most valuable factor in the evaluation of acid-base status of a patient. The pH value is an indicator of the balance between the buffer (blood), renal (kidney) and respiratory (lung) systems, and one of the most tightly controlled parameters in the body.
