Important Note

A Mother-Infant Work-Up, Pretransfusion is
required
prior to this test. No additional specimen is needed
if baby is <4 months old and mother has a negative antibody
screen.

Optimal Collection Volume: 

Mother: 6.0mL Whole Blood

Infant:   1.0mL Whole Blood

              6.0mL Cord Blood

Collection Instructions:

Collect specimen and gently invert several times to mix. Label the specimen, in the presence of the patient, with full name, date of birth and patient medical record number. 

Processing Instructions: 

1. Collect sample in pink top (or lavender for cord blood)

   container.

2. Label per policy in the presence of the patient. Label cord

   blood as such.

3. Send whole blood sample to Blood Bank for testing.

Method Name

Packed cells will be dispensed in a syringe with volume ordered
plus 10 mL for infusion tubing. Units will be prefiltered with
leukopoor filters to decrease risk of cytomegalovirus infection and
will be hemoglobin S negative. Packed cell hematocrit will be
70% to 75%.

Sample Retention Time

Blood Bank specimens (other than Cord Blood) are retained in the Blood Bank for 30 days. Pretransfusion testing should be completed within 2 days of collection.
