Important Note

This test is required before a transfusion will be
performed for a neonate. Mother’s name, hospital number, address, and
specimen source are required on Mother's specimen if submitted.

Specimen Required

Patient Preparation:

Testing requires a whole blood specimen from infant as well as Cord Blood (if available) and Mother's whole blood specimen (if available).

Whole Blood: Mother--Pink Top (EDTA)

                       Infant--Lavender microtainer

        

Cord Blood: Lavender

Acceptable: Mother--Lavender

                    Cord Blood--Pink top or Red Top

      

Optimal Collection Volume: 

Mother: 6.0mL Whole Blood

Infant:   1.0mL Whole Blood

              6.0mL Cord Blood

Collection Instructions:

Collect specimen and gently invert several times to mix. Label the specimen, in the presence of the patient, with full name, date of birth and patient medical record number. 

Processing Instructions: 

1. Collect sample in pink top (or lavender for cord blood)

   container.

2. Label per policy in the presence of the patient. Label cord

   blood as such.

3. Send whole blood sample to Blood Bank for testing.

Useful For

ABO, Rh and maternal antibody screen to detect clinically significant unexpected anitbodies in order to  provide compatible blood components to neonates.

Sample Retention Time

Blood Bank specimens (other than Cord Blood) are retained in the Blood Bank for 30 days. Cord Blood specimens are held for 14 days. Pretransfusion testing should be completed within 2 days of collection.
