Specimen Required

Container Type:

Optimal Collection Volume: 

Light blue top tube: 1.8 ml whole blood (must be filled to line)

AND

Lav top tube: 2.0 ml whole blood

Collection Instructions:

Blue top tube must be filled to line.

Blue top tube and lav top tube should be gently inverted immediately after collection.

Place "DO NOT SPIN" sticker at the top of the blue top tube. 

Processing Instructions: 

1. Do not refrigerate blue top tube.

2. Do not centrifuge samples.

3. Both samples should be given to Hematology dept for testing.

Useful For

This testing will assist in determining the cause of platelet clumping.  A platelet count will be performed on a lav top EDTA tube and on a blue top sodium citrate tube.  An interpretation will be provided based upon the results of the platelet counts.

Collecting minimum volumes can result in a need for sample recollection, and/or a delay in results. Minimum volumes are subjective and cannot account for all aspects of specimen and testing needs.
