Patient Preparation:

Cord Blood Specimens must have cord blood indicated on label. If cord blood is not available

Optimal:  Cord Blood--Lavender

Acceptable: Heel Stick--Lavender Microtainer

Optimal Collection Volume: 

6.0mL Cord Blood

1.5mL Heel Stick

Collection Instructions:

Collect specimen and gently invert several times to mix. Label the specimen, in the presence of the patient, with full name, date of birth and patient medical record number. 

Processing Instructions: 

1. Collect cord blood (or heel stick) sample.

2. Label per policy in the presence of the patient.

3. Send whole blood sample to Blood Bank for testing.

Useful For

The evaluation of possble causes/signs of Hemolytic Disease of the Fetus and Newborn (HDFN) and to identify mothers who are Rh Immunoglobulin candidates.

Sample Retention Time

Blood Bank specimens (other than Cord Blood) are retained in the Blood Bank for 30 days. Cord Blood is retained in the Blood Bank for 14 days. Pretransfusion testing should be completed within 2 days of collection.
