Methodology
Includes quantitative culture, identification, and susceptibility testing of clinically significant isolates. Anaerobic culture may be performed on suprapubic aspirate specimen, if requested.

Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Urine; clean catch, cystoscopy, catheterized, or suprapubic aspirate
Container/Tube: Urine Collection Kit-grey-top urine culture tube or sterile cup
Specimen Volume: 4 mL in grey-top tube or 1 mL in sterile cup
Collection Instructions:
1. See Urine Collection in Special Instructions for additional instructions.
2. Label specimen with patient’s full name, date of birth, date and time of collection, and source of specimen.
Causes for Rejection: Foley catheter tips or improper storage
Note: Specimen growing 3 or more potential pathogens at >10,000 CFU/mL is considered to be contaminated during collection and a repeat specimen will be requested.

Refrigerate 24 hours/Ambient 2 hours OK-Sterile Cup
Refrigerate 48 hours/Ambient 48 hours OK-Grey-Top Urine Culture Tube
Reference Values
Normal finding: no growth or <10,000 CFU/mL
Abnormal finding: >10,000 CFU/mL of 2 or fewer clinically significant urinary pathogens
