Methodology

Both a protein electrophoresis and serum immunfixation are performed:

Protein Electrophoresis:Includes albumin, alpha-1, alpha-2, beta- and gamma-globulins, total protein, and clinical interpretation by a pathologist.

Serum Immunofixation: Includes identification of monoclonal gammopathies and
pathologist interpretation.

Immunofixation electrophoresis of serum is most often ordered to evaluate a monoclonal globulin detected in a protein electrophoresis or to delineate a possible lymphoproliferative process, particularly myeloma. This procedure will characterize the specific light- and heavy-chain components of a monoclonal protein.
