Methodology
Quantitative bacteriologic culture of tissue is useful only in
the management of burns and other traumatic wounds to evaluate the graft recipient site for infection before or to monitor the progress of granulation for secondary closure of a wound.
Includes serial dilution of specimen, gram stain, and
quantitative bacterial culture (CFU/g; colony forming units per
gram) of tissue specimens. Includes susceptibility testing as
appropriate.

Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Fresh tissue
Container/Tube: Screw-capped, sterile
container
Specimen Volume: A minimum of 0.5 g
or approximately 1 cm x 2 cm
Collection Instructions:
1. Specimen source and time of collection are
required.
2. Label container with patient’s full name, date of
birth, date and time of collection, and source of
specimen.
3. Specimen submitted in formalin is not
acceptable.

Reference Values
Normal finding: growth of <100,000 CFU/g
Abnormal finding: growth of >100,000 CFU/g
