Useful For
Testing for the presence of infectious mononucleosis heterophile antibodies as an aid in the diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis. Currently, the heterophile antibody test is the most common procedure for the diagnosis of acute infectious mononucleosis (IM). It uses mononucleosis antigens to detect IM heterophile antibodies. However, up to 20% of patients with primary EBV infection do not develop heterophile antibodies. With the introduction of EBV VCA IgM testing, the detection of acute IM has been enhanced. However, EBV VCA IgM may not be detectable in all acute IM patients, thus testing for both heterophile antibody and anti-VCA IgM increases the likelihood of detecting acute primary infection.

Specimen Minimum Volume
Collecting minimum volumes can result in a need for sample recollection, and/or a delay in results. Minimum volumes are subjective and cannot account for all aspects of specimen and testing needs. Refer to the Specimen Required section for optimal volumes for laboratory specimens. Contact the Bronson Laboratory if complex collection exceptions occur that require more information.
