Test Code Lab534 (FNA) Cytology, Needle Aspiration
Methodology
Wright Giemsa Stain/Papanicolaou Stain
Includes routine cytologic evaluation of air-dried smears,
monolayer smear preparation by ThinPrep method, and a cell
block.
Used to aid in the diagnosis of certain malignant,
non-neoplastic or inflammatory conditions. Special stains may
be
performed, if indicated.
Performing Laboratory
Bronson Laboratory Services-Cytology
Specimen Requirements
Call Bronson Inpatient CT at 269-341-6239 in advance to
schedule
radiographic guided procedures with Anatomic Pathology. A
pathologist can also perform superficial aspirates upon request
by
calling 269-341-8997.
Specimen Type: Most superficial or deep
lesions
are accessible to fine-needle aspiration
Container/Tube: CytoLyt
container and
smears
Specimen Volume: Two air-dried smears
per
pass
Collection Instructions:
1. Aseptically collect needle aspirate-prepared smears.
2. Rinse needle in CytoLyt solution, and submit CytoLyt
container with smears.
3. Label slides and container with patient’s full name,
date
of birth, date of collection, and source of specimen.
4. Send specimen with completed requisition to the
laboratory immediately.
Additional Information: Cause for rejection
includes improper labeling.

patient’s full name, date of birth, specimen source, date
of
service, and pertinent clinical history
