Methodology

Grocott’s Methenamine-Silver Stain/Wright Giemsa
Stain/Papanicolaou Stain

Includes staining of a monolayer smear preparation by ThinPrep
method with methenamine-silver, Wright Giemsa stains, and
Papanicolaou stain.

Immunocompromised patients may develop progressive pulmonary
insufficiency from pulmonary infiltrates due to
Pneumocystis, fungus, cytomegalovirus (CMV), or herpes
virus infections. Open lung biopsy or bronchoscopy may be required
to detect the organism so that appropriate therapy may be
instituted in these life-threatening situations.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Bronchoalveolar lavage
(preferred), sputum, or bronchial washing

Container/Tube: CytoLyt solution
container

Specimen Volume: Entire collection

Collection Instructions: 

1. Physician aseptically collects specimen.
2. Label container with patient’s full name, date of birth,
date of collection, and source of specimen.
3. Send specimen with completed requisition to the laboratory
immediately at ambient temperature.

Additional Information: Causes for
rejection include improper collection or incomplete request
form.

Forms: Pathology requisition; include
patient’s full name, date of birth, specimen source, date of
service, name special stain request, and pertinent
clinical history
