Methodology

Enzymatic measurment of L-Lactate.

 

Note:  This test does not measure D-Lactate, which is associated with gastrointestinal tract bacterial overgrown seen in conditions such as short bowel syndrome. The preferred sample for D-Lactate is urine, and the test is available through our reference lab. Note: Sample requirements differ between testing performed in the laboratories at Bronson Methodist, Lakeview, and South Haven vs. testing performed by the Respiratory Care department in Battle Creek. See details below. 

 

Bronson Battle Creek Specimen Requirements

Optimal Specimen Volume

Full tube

Minimum Volume

1 mL whole blood

Collection Instructions

  • If a tourniquet is used, it must not be applied for more than one minute.
  • After collection, invert the sample several times to mix blood.
  • Do not centrifuge
  • Send sample to respiratory department immediately for processing.
Processing Instructions
  • Specimens must be processed within 30 minutes of collection.
Causes for Rejection
  • PST (mint top)
  • Specimen not processed within 30 minutes of collection

Specimen Transport Temperature

Must be tested as heparinized whole blood (for BBC Respiratory testing). Plasma is also acceptable at BMH/BLH/BSH laboratories. 

Sending specimen on ice may help with sample stability, but is not required.

0.7-2.5 mmol/L

 

Critical Value: > 4.0 mmol/L
