Important Note

Specimen Labelling Requirement: Label the specimen in the presence of the patient with the patient’s full name, date of birth, and medical record number. Dual Signoff must be documented on the label, consisting of the collector’s employee ID and witness initials. The witness may be another employee, the patient, or a designated caregiver. Specimens with incomplete Dual Signoff must be redrawn.

Collection Instructions:

Collect specimen and gently invert several times to mix. Label the specimen, in the presence of the patient, with full name, date of birth, and patient medical record number. Complete Dual Signoff requirement. 

Processing Instructions: 

1. Collect sample in pink top container.

2. Label per policy in the presence of the patient.

3. Send whole blood sample to Blood Bank for testing.

Useful For

If crossmatch needs have not yet been determined but are possible, specimen may be drawn and stored in Blood Bank. Specimen is avaible for 72 hours after collection.  If crossmatch becomes necessary, turnaround time is decreased since specimen does not need to be drawn and transported. Only a draw fee is charged if testing is not activated.

Collecting minimum volumes can result in a need for sample recollection, and/or a delay in results. Minimum volumes are subjective and cannot account for all aspects of specimen and testing needs. Refer to the Specimen Required section for optimal volumes for laboratory specimens. Contact the Bronson Laboratory if complex collection exceptions occur that require more information.

Sample Retention Time

Blood Bank specimens (other than Cord Blood) are retained in the Blood Bank for 30 days. Pretransfusion testing should be completed within 2 days of collection.
