Optimal Collection Volume:

1 syringe (2 mL whole blood)

Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL
Collection Instructions:
  1. FIO2 is required for documentation.
  2. Patient should be in a supine position and relaxed.
  3. If temperature correction is required, specify the temperature on the order form.
  4. Once the specimen is collected, send it promptly to the lab.
Specimen Transport:

Refrigerate

Processing Instructions:
  1. Bring the specimen directly to chemistry and place it in the ice bin.
  2. Keep the specimen on ice until it is ready for testing.

Specimen Stability

Assay as soon as possible. Specimens are stable at room temperature for 30 minutes and 2 hours on ice.

Specimen Rejection Criteria

Quantity not sufficient

Useful For

Evaluating acid-base status

Evaluating disturbances in the partial pressure of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the blood

Evaluating total hemoglobin as oxygen saturation in the blood.

Methodology
