Epic Codes

For pediatric patients 6 months of age or younger:  LAB46201

  • 2 separate draws in a Pediatric Blood Culture bottle

For patients over 6 months of age:    LAB462

  • 2 separate draws in an Aerobic and Anaerobic Blood Culture bottle set

Methodology

Includes aerobic and anaerobic bacterial culture for adults,
aerobic culture for pediatrics, antimicrobial removal culture, Gram
stain of all positive cultures, and identification and
susceptibility testing of clinically significant pathogens. This
test does not include culture for mycobacteria or viruses.

Specimen Requirements

Optimal sensitivity of blood culture requires 2 sets (30-40 mL)
per day drawn from different sites.

Preliminary negative results are given after 24 and 48 hours of
incubation. Final negative reports are given after 5 days of
incubation.

Specimen source, date and time of
draw, patient’s age, physician’s name, clinical
diagnosis, and any unusual organisms suspected are
required.

Pediatric Collection

Specimen Type: Blood

Container/Tube: Pediatric (pink) blood
culture bottle

Specimen Volume: Body Weight
dependent.  See below Pediatric Chart.

Collection Instructions:

1. For detailed collection instructions, see Blood Culture
Collection Procedure in Special Instructions.

2. Disinfect venipuncture site and allow to air dry. Disinfect
top of culture bottle.

3. Draw blood and inoculate directly into bottle.
Do not change needle on syringe prior to
inoculating bottle. Do not inject air into
bottle.

4. Label bottle with patient’s full name, date of
birth, and date and time of draw.

Adult Collection

Specimen Type: Blood

Container/Tube: Aerobic (silver) and
anaerobic (purple) blood culture bottles

Specimen Volume: 20 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. For detailed collection instructions, see Blood Culture
Collection Procedure in Special Instructions.

2. Disinfect venipuncture site and allow to air dry. Disinfect
tops of blood culture bottles.

3. Draw blood and inoculate 10 mL into aerobic bottle and 10 mL
into anaerobic bottle. Do not change the needle on
the syringe prior to inoculating bottles. Do not
inject air into bottles.

4. Label bottles with patient’s full name, date of
birth, and date and time of draw.
