Test Code ACTH60 ACTH Stimulation Test, Baseline and 60-Minute Post Injection

Important Note

This test consists of a Baseline Cortisol (Pre Cosyntropin injection) and a 60 minute post injection Cortisol only. Requests for additional Cortisol levels, ACTH (Adrenocorticotropic Hormone) or other laboratory testing in unison with the stimulation testing must be submitted as a separate request and coordinated prior to injection to ensure proper draw times.

Reference Values

Usual normal response is an approximate doubling of the baseline level provided that baseline level does not exceed the normal range (a.m.: 6.0-18.4 mcg/dL). Many patients with normal adrenal function, however, do not respond to the expected degree.

The following criteria have been established to denote a normal response:

Baseline cortisol level should exceed 5 mcg/dL

The 60-minute, post-injection level should show an increase of at least 7 mcg/dL above the baseline level or a peak response of >18 mcg/dL.
