Reference Values
Usual normal response is an approximate doubling of the baseline level provided that baseline level does not exceed the normal range (a.m.: 6.0-18.4 mcg/dL). Many patients with normal adrenal function, however, do not respond to the expected degree.
The following criteria have been established to denote a normal response:
Baseline cortisol level should exceed 5 mcg/dL
The 60-minute, post-injection level should show an increase of at least 7 mcg/dL above the baseline level or a peak response of >18 mcg/dL.

A baseline sample is collected, then Cosyntropin is injected intramuscularly by an RN. A peak sample is collected at 60-minutes post injection.
