6mL whole blood

Collection Instructions:

Collect specimen and gently invert several times to mix. Label the specimen, in the presence of the patient, with full name, date of birth and patient medical record number. 

Processing Instructions: 

1. Collect sample in pink top container.

2. Label per policy in the presence of the patient.

3. Send whole blood sample to Blood Bank for testing.

Useful For

Monitoring alloantibody levels in sensitized pregnant women for management of Hemolytic Disease of the Fetus and Newborn (HDFN). Generally repeated at intervals throughout a pregnancy to monitor for significant increases.

Reference Values

Coombs (antiglobulin) titer ranges vary with the clinically significant antibody being titered, but generally  ≥1:16 is considered indicative for further evaluation and intervention. Current specimens are run concurrently with the most recent previous specimen (when availble) to assist in determining if a true increase in alloantibody titer has occurred.

Sample Retention Time

Blood Bank specimens (other than Cord Blood) are retained in the Blood Bank for 30 days. Pretransfusion testing should be completed on specemins wtihin 2 days of collection.
