Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Urine, 24 hour. Entire collection.

Container/Tube: Clean, plastic urine container

Specimen Volume: 2.0 mL aliquot from well mixed 24-hour urine.

Collection Instruction:

1. No preservative. Refrigerate specimen during collection.

Additional Information:

1. 24-Hour volume is required.

2. Starting and ending dates/times of collection are required.

3. Follow instructions in Patient Instructions for 24-Hour Collection under Special Instructions.

Processing Instructions:

1. Assay urinary uric acid as soon as possible.

2. Measure and record total volume.

3. Mix entire collection well and pour off 2.0 mL aliquot into a false bottom container.

        *Optimallyspecimen should not be refrigerated.  However, sample

         may be refrigerated if collected with other tests that require refrigeration.
4. If refrigerated: Mix entire specimen well, take an aliquot from the well mixed entire collection and put
              in a 37C waterbath for 30 minutes to bring precipitated urates back into solution.

5.  Mix well and test sample promptly.
