Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Urine, 24 hour. Entire collection.
Container/Tube: Clean, plastic urine container.
Specimen Volume: 2.0 mL, PH<1.0.
Collection Instructions:
1. Refrigerate specimen during collection.
2. Return sample to lab for processing.
Please note: 25 mL of 6N HCl may be added as preservative at
start of collection. If not added at that time, sample will
need to acidified when processed. Refrigerate
specimen
during collection.
Additional Information:
1. 24-Hour volume is required.
2. Starting and ending times of collection are required.
3. Follow instructions in Patient Instructions for 24-Hour Collection under Special Instructions.
Processing Instructions:
1. Measure and record total volume.
2. Vigorously shake the entire container of urine to ensure that all of the contents are properly mixed prior to pouring off aliquots.
3. Pour off two aliquots into clean, unused urine cups.
4. One aliquot should not be acidified. Label as such. This is done in case there are any add-ons that cannot have acidified urine.
5. Acidify the other urine aliquot with 6N HCL to a PH< 1.0. Label the aliquot as "acidified".
6. Mix well and pour off a 2.0 mL acidified aliquot (min 1.0 mL) of urine into a false bottom tube.
