Methodology
Includes a routine urinalysis and microscopic examination including: color, appearance, specific gravity, pH, protein, glucose, occult blood, ketones, bilirubin, urobilinogen, and nitrite. Microscopic examination of urine sediment is also performed.
A urine culture is set up if there are >9 WBC/hpf, >1+ bacteria, positive nitrite or >small leukocyte esterase. See memo at left under "Resources" for additional details.
Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Urine; clean catch, cystoscopy, catheterized, or suprapubic aspirate
Container/Tube: Urine Collection Kit-cherry/yellow UA tube or sterile cup
Specimen Volume: 10 mL
Specimen Minimum Volume: 1 mL

Causes for Rejection: Improper storage or quantity not sufficient
