Specimen Requirements

Battle Creek (269) 704-4142
Kalamazoo (269) 341-8700
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Preferred
Specimen
Type: Plasma
Container/Tube: PST mint top gel, green
top (heparin) or grey-top (potassium oxalate/sodium
fluoride). Spin down to separate plasma from cells as soon as
possible. NOTE: Grey top tube has a preservative, and prompt
centrifugation is not required.
Specimen Volume: 3 mL
Collection Instructions:
1. Patient should have nothing to eat or drink for at least
8
hours before test (except for sips of water). Patient remains
fasting including no smoking, chewing gum, or Lifesavers.
2. Draw blood for the following specimens: fasting,
30-,
60-, 90-, and 120-minute glucose measurements.
3. Report occurrence of any vomiting to the laboratory.
Patient
is encouraged to drink a moderate amount (1 to 2 glasses) of
water
during test. Patient should remain seated or in bed during
test.
4. Label specimens with corresponding draw time and
interval.
Alternate
Specimen
Type: Serum
Container/Tube: SST gold top gel or plain red
top are acceptable, but not preferred because the sample must first
be allowed to clot before centrifugation. Extended contact
between cells and serum can falsely lower glucose values.
