Reactive specimen will require testing for HIV1 RNA by PCR, which may require a new sample.

Medical evaluation and counseling should be considered an
important part of HIV antibody testing and should include test
result confirmation on a freshly drawn specimen for any patient
with initially positive results. Consideration should also be given
to negative test results; such results do not preclude the
possibility of exposure to or infection with HIV.
