Specimen Transport Temperature

Refrigerate

Note: there are several specimen handling factors involved inaccurate ionized calcium measurement.

1)   High concentrations of heparin can interfere: for this reason Heparinized tubes should be 3/4 full.

2)   ICAL is sensitive to pH changes.

  • Exposure to air will cause the co2 in the sample to evaporate which will raise the ph.  For this reason, tubes must remain capped  until tested.
  • Prolonged exposure to metabolically active cells will lower the  pH, for this reason heparinized
  • whole blood should be kept cool, and serum gel tubes should be spun.
